What is Physician Payment for Oversight of Home Care Services?
With the increased involvement of home health and hospice services in the delivery of care to the elderly, disabled and infirmed, physician efforts have correspondingly increased in developing and managing plans of care for these patients.
The Medicare program implemented new rules, which became effective January 1, 1995, providing reimbursement to physicians for time spent overseeing the plan of care of certain home care and hospice patients under Medicare Part B.
In November, 2000, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services authorized two new HCPCS codes for physicians. G0180 is used when a physician certifies an initial plan of care for a home health patient. G01790 is used when a physician recertifies a home health patient for a subsequent episode of care (every 60 days).
Today, in 2006, the reimbursement rate in out-state, Michigan, (not “Detroit”), for 30 minutes or more per calendar month of care plan oversight for the same amount of care is $121.25 CPO for the home health patient and $127.53 CPO for the hospice patient.
